A stiff baseball glove is one of the most frustrating things in the game — whether it's a brand new glove that needs breaking in, or an older glove that's dried out from a long offseason. The good news: softening leather the right way is simple, fast, and doesn't require any of the old-school tricks you've probably heard about.
No microwave. No shaving cream. No soaking it in water. Those methods can damage the leather, warp the shape, or strip the natural oils that keep your glove performing at its best.
Here's how to do it right.
Why Gloves Get Stiff
Leather is a natural material that loses moisture over time — especially when exposed to heat, sweat, dirt, and UV light. When the oils in the leather dry out, the fibers tighten and the glove becomes stiff and unresponsive. A stiff glove closes slowly, loses its pocket feel, and is more likely to cause errors on hard-hit balls.
The fix isn't to force the leather open — it's to restore the moisture that's been lost.
Step 1: Clean First
Before applying any conditioner or cream, clean the glove. Dirt and salt on the surface will prevent products from penetrating the leather properly. Use Fortune Field Cleaner with a brush to lift surface grime, then wipe clean and let it dry briefly.
Step 2: Apply Cream to the Full Glove
This is the key step for softening. Apply Fortune Field Original Cream (included in the Care Kit) or the Fortune Field Delicate Cream (available separately, ideal for premium leather) across the entire glove. Work it in with your fingers or a cloth, paying extra attention to stiff areas like the hinge, the heel, and the finger stalls.
The cream replenishes the oils in the leather, allowing the fibers to relax and the glove to become more pliable. You'll often feel a difference within minutes.
Step 3: Work the Glove
After applying cream, work the glove by hand — open and close it repeatedly, pound the pocket, and flex the hinges. This helps the leather absorb the product and accelerates the break-in process. If you have a ball, put it in the pocket and wrap the glove overnight.
Step 4: Finish with Oil on the Catching Surface
Once the cream has absorbed, apply Fortune Field Leather Oil to the catching surface only. This adds a deeper conditioning treatment to the area that takes the most impact, and leaves a slight natural tack that improves feel and grip. Don't apply oil to the full glove — targeted application keeps the leather structured where it needs to be.
Step 5: Protect with Wax
Finish by applying Fortune Field Wax to the backside of the glove and inside the hand stall. The wax seals in the moisture you've just restored, protects against UV and elements on the backside, and creates a barrier in the hand stall that slows future sweat damage. This is the step that makes your conditioning work last.
How Long Does It Take?
The full 4-step routine takes about 10–15 minutes. For a severely stiff glove, you may want to repeat the process over 2–3 sessions spaced a day apart. Most players see significant improvement after the first treatment.
Prevention Is Easier Than the Fix
The best way to deal with a stiff glove is to never let it get that way. A quick maintenance routine before and after games — especially in dry, hot, or cold conditions — keeps the leather in game-ready shape all season. The Fortune Field Care Kit makes this easy, affordable, and fast enough that there's no excuse to skip it.
Start kids on this routine early and it becomes second nature. A player who takes care of their glove is a player who takes care of their game.
